What is Lactic Acid Anyway?

Anybody that trains or competes in sport will have suffered the full extent of lactic acid and some point or another. Its feels like a horrible demon that attacks your muscles when you least expect it! A recent experience I had been during a half marathon. For 11.5 miles I was going well, my pace was good and consistent, heart rate was looking good, was taking on my final energy gel and keeping hydrated. I was feeling strong and confident. Then, out of nowhere my legs were starting to feel tight and aching.

You? ELITE?

You may have heard the rumours; this has been in the pipeline for
a while now.

The Elite PB programme is here.

Now, I believe that the people we work with are motivated to
achieve more physically than they currently have. Whether they
want to be leaner, run further, get there faster, move a heavier
weight or just feel even better than they ever have before.

Ultimately it's not winning that motivates people, it's progress.

We keep handing out the challenges and you guys keep hitting
them out of the park!

Gym ball: Gimic or Gold?

Given all the hours I have spent in the gym it’s not surprising I have seen alot of exercises that are an     accident waiting to happen or will do more harm than good. There are too many exercises performed incorrectly and too many methods of which there is no evidence to support there use. I could go on all day naming them all but I just want to talk about one. The performance of resistance exercises on unstable equipment has increased in popularity, despite the lack of research supporting their effectiveness.

What’s Occurring: Insulin-like Growth Factor 1

What’s Occurring: Insulin-like Growth Factor 1

Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF1) is an anabolic molecule that, like insulin, promotes growth, but is far stronger. In a study by Canalis, Centrella and Hock (1988) IGF1 was found to increase the rate of bone matrix apposition by 45-50% in just 24 hours. Compare this to Insulin that also increased bone matrix number density by 40-50% but other anabolic effects in bone-growth cells were not nearly as significant.

Improving Vertical Jump Height for Sprint Performance

If your a sprinter wanting to improve speed or a basketball player wanting to jump higher or that your just fed up getting the ladder out every time your cat gets stuck in the tree then you should be training to improve your vertical jump. The key ingredient for this is explosive leg power which if you have ever watched a sprinter explode out of the blocks and down the track you will see just how much explosive power they generate.

Translation: Is gluten linked to neurological disorders?

Several research studies suggest that in approximately 50% of cases tested in the studies, people with gluten sensitivities also experience some form of neurological disorder. That’s not to say that it’s true in 50/100 cases as much as it is for 50,000/ 100,000 cases however it does pose some question and consideration as to whether eating gluten is really worth it.

Is gluten linked to disorders of the nervous system?

In 1999 researchers Davies-Jones, Gibson, Hadjivassiliou, Lobo, Milford-Ward and Stephenson found indications that there was a positive correlation between sensitivity to ingested gluten and undiagnosed neurological illnesses. Gluten sensitivity can be detected by measuring the markers ( IgG and IgA – Antigliadin antibodies )of the autoimmune functions the body generates to respond to bowel irritation caused by gluten.
