Is Personal Training Ruining Your Workout?

If you really, really want to achieve some results and really, really want to get fit and build the body you’ve always wanted then WHY on earth would you train 1:1 with a personal trainer? The fitness industry keeps this little gem under its hat because so much money is made every year from personal training that it would be counter productive to show you a better way to train.
I’m going to take a lot of flak for this but it needs to be said. So, is your personal trainer ruining your chances of being fit and healthy?

Absolutely.

There is a phenomenon called Social Facilitation. The theory behind it states that performance in a task you are technically competent in is improved by the presence of an observer. This is seen with the fantastic results a good personal trainer can achieve. A fitness expert understands exactly how your body works and how to structure a programme so that you get exactly what you want. Furthermore no one wants to look foolish whilst someone is watching so you push yourself that little bit harder and you consciously focus more on the task at hand. Performance really is improved. There is no doubt about that. Countless tests and studies prove it, as does day-to-day experience. I’m not disputing that and personal training is far, far more effective than an individual hitting the gym just to watch TV and chat. I DO disagree with lying to the public.
PT is not THE most efficient way to train by any stretch and every personal trainer that tells you that is doing so to line their own pocket. Period. But hey, that’s ok because it’s only the customer that loses out right?

Here’s the truth.

Social facilitation also states that in addition to an observer, a co-performer in a learned task will also increase psychological arousal to the point at which performance is further improved. So what does this mean? Training with other people makes YOU train harder than YOU training hard 1:1 with a personal trainer.
Ultimately it’s simple psychology but it stands to cause a lot of damage to a lot of self-employed instructors and businesses that rely on 1:1 training and don’t bother to innovate for the benefit of their customers.

Here’s the key to success:
Train hard
Work with a dedicated specialist who understands the human body
Train with others who work as hard as you do
Enjoy your training and stay focussed
